Is my skin dry or dehydrated? Take the 6-question check

They feel the same (tight, dull, sometimes flaky) but one is a skin type that needs oil and the other is a temporary state that needs water. Using the fix for the wrong one is why so many people stay tight and dull for years.

1. Does your skin get shiny or oily anywhere during the day?
2. Pinch the skin on your cheek gently and let go. What happens?
3. Has this always been how your skin is?
4. Pores and breakouts?
5. Any of these lately: flights, heating or air-con, harsh cleanser, new acids or retinol, less sleep, more alcohol or coffee?
6. How does a rich cream feel on your skin?

Hydration is one of the four numbers Gloss tracks

Instead of guessing from how your skin feels, Gloss scores hydration from a daily selfie and shows you whether the serum, the humidifier or the extra water is actually moving it.

Why oily skin gets dehydrated

Oil and water are separate systems. Sebaceous glands make oil. Water comes from the deeper layers and is held in the top layer by natural moisturizing factors and an intact barrier. Harsh cleansers, over-exfoliating, dry air and sun damage the barrier and let water escape, and the skin often responds by making more oil. That is the shiny-but-tight combination people describe as "oily and dry at the same time".

The most common causes of dehydration

How fast it fixes

Dehydration responds within days once the cause is gone and a humectant plus moisturizer goes on. Dry skin is a permanent tendency that needs a permanent routine. If you fix the water and the tightness comes back within a week without an obvious cause, you are probably dry as well as dehydrated.

Common questions

Can oily skin be dehydrated?

Yes, and it is one of the most common skin states. Oily skin makes plenty of sebum but can still lose water through a damaged barrier, which leaves it shiny and tight at the same time.

How do I know if my skin is dehydrated?

Pinch the skin on your cheek gently. If it shows fine crinkles and takes a second to smooth out, it is short on water. Other signs: dullness, tightness that comes and goes, makeup that looks patchy, and fine lines that look worse in the afternoon.

Does drinking water help dehydrated skin?

Only a little unless you are actually dehydrated overall. Skin hydration depends mostly on the barrier holding water in. Humectant serums and a moisturizer on top move the number faster than an extra litre of water.

What is the best moisturizer for dehydrated skin?

A gel-cream with glycerin, hyaluronic acid or panthenol, applied over damp skin. For dry skin, choose a richer cream with ceramides and fatty acids instead.

How long does dehydrated skin take to recover?

Usually three to seven days once you remove the cause and add humectant plus moisturizer. If it does not improve in two weeks, your barrier may need a longer break from actives.
