Is my skin purging or breaking out? Take the check
A purge is your skin clearing out faster because a product sped up turnover. A breakout from a product is your skin telling you it does not like it. They look similar for the first week and the correct response to each is the opposite. Seven questions sort it out.

Watch your clarity score through the purge
A real purge shows up as clarity dipping for a few weeks and then climbing above where it started. Gloss scores clarity from a daily selfie, so you see the curve instead of guessing from the mirror.

Purging versus breaking out
| Purging | Breakout or reaction | |
|---|---|---|
| Caused by | Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, peels | Any product, most often moisturizers, oils, sunscreens, makeup, fragrance |
| Where | Your usual breakout zones | New areas too |
| Type of spot | Small whiteheads and blackheads that clear quickly | Inflamed, deep, or rash-like uniform bumps |
| Timing | Starts within 1 to 2 weeks, peaks 2 to 4, gone by 6 to 8 | Can start any time, keeps going while you use it |
| Healing | Faster than usual | Slower, may leave marks |
| What to do | Reduce frequency, keep going, moisturize | Stop, simplify, reintroduce one thing at a time |
Why purging happens
A clogged pore takes weeks to travel to the surface on its own. Retinoids and exfoliating acids speed that up, so clogs that were already forming under the skin all arrive at once. That is why a purge happens in your usual spots: the clogs were already there. A product that does not change turnover, like a moisturizer, cannot purge. If a moisturizer breaks you out, it is a breakout.
How to make a purge shorter
- Start actives at two nights a week and build up over a month, rather than nightly from day one.
- Buffer: moisturizer first, active on top, for the first few weeks.
- Do not pick. Purge spots clear on their own within days if left alone, and picked ones leave marks that last months.
- Keep the rest of the routine boring. One new active at a time.
When to see someone
Painful cysts, spots that scar, or a breakout that has lasted more than eight weeks despite stopping new products. A dermatologist can prescribe things that work faster than anything over the counter, and will spot conditions like fungal acne or perioral dermatitis that look like breakouts but need a different treatment.
Common questions
How do I know if my skin is purging or breaking out?
Purging comes from products that increase cell turnover (retinoids, acids, benzoyl peroxide), appears in your usual breakout spots, consists of small fast-clearing whiteheads, and settles by week six to eight. Breakouts can come from any product, show up in new areas, are often inflamed or rash-like, and continue as long as you keep using the product.
How long does skin purging last?
Two to six weeks in most cases, with the peak around week two to four. Anything still getting worse at eight weeks is not a purge.
Can moisturizer cause purging?
No. Purging requires something that speeds up cell turnover. If a moisturizer, sunscreen, oil or cleanser causes new spots, that is a breakout from the product and the fix is to stop it.
Should I stop using a product if I'm purging?
Usually not. Reduce to every other night, moisturize, and change nothing else. Stop only for burning, swelling, hives, or if it is still worse after eight weeks.
Does niacinamide cause purging?
Rarely, since it does not significantly increase turnover. Breakouts after starting niacinamide are more often a reaction to the formula, especially at high concentrations above 10%, or to another ingredient in the same product.
